WD Black SN850 Is It Worth it?

I have been using the Western Digital WD Black SN850 model with 1 TB of storage for a while, and during this time I had the opportunity to test it on both PlayStation 5 and PC. Let’s take a closer look at the general features and performance of the WD Black SN 850 model.

WD Black SN850 Review

First, Western Digital SN850, which offers a storage solution that we can use from the M2 slot, has very high reading and writing rates.

There is a very important performance difference between the M2 model that I used before and WD Black SN850.

Also, since it has 1 TB of storage space, I started to install the games that I play very often to the C: drive. Thus, I reached a much faster performance value. there are differences of six- or seven-seconds performance improvements compared to WD M2 SATA SSD. In certain games, the duration would be over 10 seconds.

As I said at the beginning, the model I use is the version with 1 TB capacity. Apart from this model, the same series also has 500 GB and 2 TB versions with the same features. According to your needs, WD has offered different solutions in this way. I preferred the 1TB version because I play a lot of games and work on project files. Especially using After Effects and Premier Pro files, which I use frequently, on this storage unit had a significant impact on performance.

In terms of design, the Western Digital SN850 model, which has a classic M2 appearance, uses the PCIe Gen 4 interface as bandwidth. This means that it will achieve much higher read and write rates than many models on the market using PCIe 3. As a matter of fact, when we look at the figures of the SSD on paper, we see that it has the features of reading up to 7000 MB / s and writing up to 5300 MB/s

In our tests, I can say that we have seen that this model is quite close to the figures on paper. This model, which can go up to 6740 MB / s in reading, can go up to 5800 MB / s in writing. Of course, we should also mention that your motherboard should have PCIe 4 support. If you are using an old model with PCIe 3 support, you can see that the read-write rate drops to 3500 MB/s and 3300 MB/s.

In other words, if you bought this the Western Digital SN850 model and you reach these rates in your tests, it means that your motherboard probably supports PCIe 3, not PCIe 4. In this context, we can say that the WD SN850 model will be a good choice for future use. So, let’s say you currently have a PCIe 3 supported motherboard, and you want to buy an M2 SSD. When you choose this model, it means that you will get a model that will not cause you any trouble when you update a motherboard, processor, etc. in the future.

I have been using the Western Digital WD Black SN850 model with 1 TB of storage for a while, and during this time I had the opportunity to test it on both PlayStation 5 and PC. Let’s take a closer look at the general features and performance of the WD Black SN 850 model.

There are lean and heatsink versions of the WD SN850 model. The SSD, which works around 30-35 degrees at idle, can go up to 70 degrees when it is heavily used. Of course, while the game is running, it does not rise that much, it usually works around 38-45 degrees. But it is possible to say that the maximum temperature during the test is one click above the normal values.

If you have a good cooling system and can distribute the temperature well in the case, this will not be a problem. But if you have a temperature problem in your current case, I can say that it would be wiser for you to choose the heatsink version. You can also check the status of the SSD thanks to the WD Dashboard (Western Digital Control Panel) application.

WD Black SN850, PS5 performance

Finally, let’s talk about the PS5 performance of this SSD model. You can use this model on PS5 as it has PCIe 4 interface. Of course, you must prefer the Heatsink version, especially in the long run, for PS5 use.

Considering the size of PlayStation 5 games, the 500 GB model may not be enough for you. For this reason, I think it will be more advantageous in the long run to choose at least the 1 TB model.

When you plug the WD Black SN850 model into the PS5 M2 slot, the SSD is requested to be formatted when you turn on the console. Here, you can see the reading rate on the console as soon as you format it. When we used it on PS5, we saw that it achieved a very high read rate of 6547 MB/s.

In other words, if you need storage for the PS5, it is possible to say that WD Black SN850 model is one of the good models you would prefer.

To sum up, the WD Black SN850 model offers good performance with its read and write rates. If you have a motherboard with PCIe 4 support and you need a storage unit that should work fast for both games and video work, I can say that SN850 model is one of the necessary models.
