Yes, after talking with his wife, Amal Clooney, he decided to refuse to do an airline commercial that would pay him $35 million for a single day’s work.
In a recent interview with The Guardian, he was asked if he had ever experienced a feeling like “You know what? I think I have enough money.”
“Well, yeah. I was offered 35 million dollars for one day’s work for an airline commercial, but I talked to Amal about it and we decided it’s not worth it. It was (associated with) a country that, although it’s an ally, is questionable at times, and so I thought, ‘Well, if it takes a minute’s sleep away from me, it’s not worth it’.
As Vitmor already mentioned in his detailed answer, it seems Clooney says that it was an airline company from an ally country. In their comments to this answer, some quora users stated that the mentioned company could be Turkish Airlines. As a Turk, I was also curious.
I did research on google and found the following interview with Ali Genç about his book, who was the press advisor of Turkish Airlines between 2005-2016, which was held in 2016. The translation of the relevant paragraph is as follows:
Genç, who wrote in his book that the famous actor Kevin Costner had also met with famous Hollywood stars George Clooney and Pierce Brosnan before THY was made a commercial star in 2009, said, “Clooney demanded 12 million dollars and Brosnan 7 million dollars, while the agreed-upon figure for Kevin Costner was around 1.5 million dollars,” he said. It seems that Turkish Airlines did indeed contact Clooney in 2009 (years before he started dating Amal), and Clooney demanded $12 million. Even Brosnan’s demand of $7 million was high for Turkish Airlines. It would not be wrong to say that the mentioned airline company cannot be Turkish Airlines.
He had some personal issues with the country that operates the airline and decided that “if it takes a minute’s sleep away from me, it’s not worth it.’”
Some may feel that he could have put his issues aside for a day and donated the money to charity. But then there is also the question of ‘tainted money’ and whether any charity would have been entirely happy to accept. More
George Clooney said he once turned away $35 million for one day’s work on an airline commercial, after discussing the prospect with his wife, Amal Clooney.
In a new interview with the Guardian, published by Business Insider, the Oscar-winning actor and producer explained his decision.
George Clooney turned down $35m for a day’s filming of an airline ad
1. Justin Timberlake, McDonald’s, $6m
The singer and actor was paid $6m to sing the jingle for the McDonald’s I’m Lovin’ It campaign. The jingle was based on an existing German campaign Ich Liebe Es for the fast food brand. Music producing duo The Neptunes produced a song based on the jingle and released it. Timberlake would later tell GQ men’s magazine I regret the McDonald’s deal.
2. Brad Pitt, Chanel, $7m
Pitt has long been a proponent of topping up his Hollywood cheques with advertising money. In 2012, he became the face of the Chanel No 5 fragrance for $7m, and also went on to bank $3m to be the face of Cadillac print ads and TV commercials in China in 2015. As the current ambassador of coffee machine maker De’Longhi, Pitt stars in a commercial helmed by La La Land director Damien Chazelle.
3. Taylor Swift, Diet Coke, $26m
In 2014, the multi-Grammy award winner signed with the Coca-Cola Company a deal rumoured to be worth $26m to star in print and commercial adverts. For the soft drink brand’s Stay Extraordinary campaign, Swift was filmed writing a new song while sipping on a Diet Coke, in what the company called a peek behind the curtain at an extraordinary day in the life of a true American superstar.
4. Serena Williams, Nike, $55m
As the most successful female tennis player of all time, Williams knows her worth to advertisers. As the face of sports brand Nike, she was paid $55m over five years to wear their clothes, appear in their advertising and act as global ambassador. She has also featured in commercials for Beats headphones by Dr Dre, Berlei lingerie and AccorHotels.
